About Battle of the Books

What is Battle of the Books?

The Battle of the Books program is to encourage reading by all students at the middle school level. Our students are exposed to quality literature, representing a variety of literary styles and viewpoints by prominent authors in the area of young adult literature. The game format creates interest and excitement in reading. Through the fun and excitement of the competition, students improve reading skills, mature in their choices of reading materials, and acquire a broader knowledge base. Team practices are conducted after school, and the county-level competition is held during the school day at Southwest High School. Interested students should see the media coordinator.

How can I participate?

Tryouts will be held in the fall of each school year. All students, grades sixth through eighth, may compete for a position on the team. Teams may have up to twelve members, but that is not a requirement. The number selected is at the discretion of the Battle of the Books coach(es).
